How a Typing Mistake Cost Someone €144,000 at a Real Estate Auction

There are moments in our work that you simply don't forget. This was one of them.

We were monitoring an online real estate auction for a property in Kypseli, Athens. The opening bid was €16,000, the bidding was progressing calmly, everything seemed normal. Then, in a split second, something appeared on the screen that made us look twice.

Final bid: €160,000.

We froze. Looked again. The number was still there. One of the bidders had typed an extra zero.

The auction was essentially over at that moment.

The electronic auction platform includes a feature called "Excessively High Bid Protection". When enabled, the system warns users if their bid is significantly higher than the current price, specifically to prevent mistakes like this. The bidder in this case either didn't know about the feature or hadn't activated it.

The result? 4.800€ lost.

What happened wasn't bad luck. It was a lack of familiarity with the platform and with the auction process in general, something that can happen to anyone entering an online auction for the first time without proper preparation.

Real estate auctions have their own rules, their own tools, and their own pitfalls. From the outside, the process looks simple... you log in, see the price, place a bid. But it's the details that make the difference between a great investment and a very expensive lesson.
